Any body going to be running stock on the Sunday 22nd? How much timing are people running on there motors? As I am down to an fdr of 3.41 and still couldn't keep up down the strait at the last rrc round.

Hi Dave, If the weather holds there should be a good heat of stock, not forgetting it is a free meeting! As for fdr I run a 15t sealed can, most of the brushed guys run around 6.5 but I can't comment on brushless... Try a PM to Reuben or Jazzler they will let you know what they were running last week

I'm happy to share my gearing and settings without pm. My FDR gear ratio is 3.56. ( With a Trinity 17.5 Duo2 motor) Fixed Timing on the Can I tried many settings from 0 degree to Max (40 degree I believe) and it seemed to make very little difference to my top speed. Actually adding more timing just made it lose punch in the infield. I think the best timing for each person is going to be a personal thing, as if you are a smooth driver, you will better suit higher timings and carrying speed in the infield, but if you're not a smooth driver, you might use less fixed Can timing to give you that extra punch in the infield. My motor temps were approx 41 degree C, after each run, no matter what timing / gearing I tried. Which is WELL within the safe zone (We used to run them about 70 to 80 degrees C without being any faster) Actually I found the biggest factor of how fast I could get down the straight was by finding the fastest line onto it from the top of the hill. To gain enough momentum you need to be on full power from the top of the hill, until the end of the straight without so much as thinking about lifting from the throttle. But get the line wrong coming onto the straight and you could have already scrubbed off a whole load of your speed, making it appear that you are not geared correctly! If you gear too much you will lose too much infield power. Don't forget at bashley you Need the right balance if power for the infield, and straight line top speed. Of the 16 seconds or so it takes to complete a lap, 10 are spent in the infield and only the other 6 are on the straight. I would like to run stock on Sunday, so long as it doesn't upset anyone??

lol, looks like i am going to have to get a spur gear.
Sorry i missed rrc round 2 - My big car was having some bits done - but there were complications so i didnt get the vechile back -
I will certianly be down and racing stock, or open if im needed to beef the numbers up - both pending some semi sensible weather.

I am coming down and will be running stock too.
and completely agree with everything Jason has put. I am also at 3.4 fdr with timing on the motor. adjusting the timing did not make a massive difference past 10 degrees on the can. it just seemed to loose punch and not gain much top end - so to get any gain out of it required a very smooth line scrubbing very little speed. The speed on the straight in this class seems to be generated how you carry the speed from the hill and around the sweeper. I am on power (full throttle) as I go round the top corner (top of the hill), all the way to the end of the straight. The trick is to try and get round the sweeper with a very smooth line with almost no steering applied. if you are using to much steering because you are wide, turning to late or have a car that is to soft or hard (not handling the bumps well), then the speed you scrub off is much more than you think.

Reubes - did u have to change ur spring rate? I know kit will be pretty darn pukka - but i imagine you can get away with being slightly softer and a bit more pointy.

I didnt like the Xray springs at all for stock, made the car quite unpredictable out of the hairpins, over rotation and too aggressive for the smooth stock style. however the HPI springs really settled the car (not faster over a lap, but definitely faster over 5 minutes). Silver Blue!!

All very helpful advice thank you! I might just stick with the fdr I have, back the timing off the motor a bit to get more punch and just learn to carry more speed round the last few corners - although that's easier said than done.

No problem, I think you've got the right idea there.. Here's an interesting point to note.. The person who I learnt how to be quick around those last few corners from, is.... Mr Lloyd!! I'm not sure if he knows it (Well he does now if he didn't before ) but he is very good at that section of the track and I repeatedly tried to match his lines there which 'REALLY' helped improve my times. ;D

Silver Blue!! You need to get yourself a proper 012 Reuben. Not only will you find your 6.5 a doddle you will not notice any bumps at all coming onto the straight. That iswith kit springs, ie 3.0 and 2.6, 500 oil in the front and 400 in the year - the car is as flat as a billiard table ;D

Trust me, it was springs

This is THE best quote of 2012 for me so far. Aspiration and the challenge to be in the A final, takes me back to racing of old
