Is there much difference performance wise between the gear diff and the ball diff?

I've got a ball diff (TA-05 one I believe) and did try it for a few races. I found the gear diff (once run in properly) was better, less "maintenance".
The first time I ran it, it wound itself loose after about 4 mins. The other issue is the outdrives need to be pressed fully into the diff. So you need to put enough O rings or foam between the drive shaft and the outdrive to hold it in place. It was also fairly loose even when tightened up fully.
