So we used to use diffs in the front. Then we moved to spools - because we wanted to or because that is what the manufacturers started shipping?
So are we seeing a resurgence of diffs in the front? Flavour of the month seems to be front gear diffs packed with cleaning gum rather than oil. Really stiff; a bit like a spool but not quite.

Flavour of the month seems to be front gear diffs packed with cleaning gum rather than oil. Really stiff; a bit like a spool but not quite. Pete as regards to Bish Bash and this is only my thoughts. The Photon for me suffers understeer on our track, the front gear diff gives the car turn in compared to a spool, there for faster rotation but also with the direct drive a spool would give but with out the slip of a ball diff, there for better rip out of corners, the same can be said for a rear gear diff...A spool been fixed causes scrub and drag causing off power understeer ,so would silly thick oil on such a tight track. Rear gear diffs were born from Mod and necessity!!..Ball diffs become inconsistent with heat making driving difficult and unpredictable, this can also now be the case in 13.5 and 10.5 these days due to the extra power we have,so the consistant "feel" a gear diff gives to the car is now a must have "for some" at top level. The advantages of a gear diff to me are helpful on certain tracks but also can make the car a little "lively" to drive.Rotation, turn in,power on steering and rip out of corners can be better but you need a smoother throttle application on exit.Oil wt's are critical to rear grip and steering and can be a fine balancing act for the best compromise. Too me many drivers make the mistake of dropping a gear diff into the same ball diff set up to find the car difficult to drive,as I have said the gear diff alters the handling and some chassis/set ups will need fine adjustments to compensate to return the once had stability, especially for those who like and run a twitchy car in the first place! Rear gear diffs have proven to work better on most tracks for some drivers but personally I feel front gear diffs will be far harder to get working correctly/quicker (if at all poss) and may well be certain track specific? As for putting "Gum" in the front gear diff ,I have only heard of this in the FWD mini classes for better traction....but believe me there are high wt Silicon oils out there that are so thick they squeeze out of the bottle like tooth paste(500k wt) and need to be cut off with a blade in chunks .....theses for me are yet to be played with

Nice one Les, good stuff there and as always based on personal experience from the testing you do I like the idea of toothpaste though, it would keep the gear teeth in good condition ;D

Les would you recomend Front and rear ball diff in 17.5. The handling in pro-eco was fantastic.
