The last time I ran at Mendip was many years ago with an 1/8th car .......So here's some resent intel from a top driver that may help us.
The tracks a little more forgiving on rubber so old boots will not loose you that much time compared to Aldershot.A working Aldershot set up will work and will be a good starting point as will the FDR. The surface is a little bumpy so 6mm min ride height is needed.Good initial and power on steering is required here so the LTCR is a favored shell. The track grips up well but is murder in the wet due to the oily line left by IC cars.....It can be a bit of a car breaker too, like Motoarena/west London.......HTH Les

I was a bit taken aback by the commentator calling Aldershot a tight circuit; it aint tight for us Bashley drivers! Any view on overall stiffness at Mendip(presumably deemed "open") compared with Aldershot? We totally stiffened up the bottom and top decks at the front for Q5 on Sunday which made the car awesome on the infield but a handful on the sweeper (even for us ;D). Its a setup I would like to explore by stiffening the rear a bit too and wondered if it might be appropriate for the Mendip?

Its a setup I would like to explore by stiffening the rear a bit too and wondered if it might be appropriate for the Mendip? Hmmmm Pete, here go's Please please dont get me wrong here Pete and others ,Ive had no handling/driving experience with the latest Xray so theses comments are purely from a observational point of view (watching Reubs,Liams and Graigs cars at the Nats) The Xray has an enormous amount of steering to the point of been a little twitchy and snatchy (hooks) so I would probably concentrate on some rear entry/exit grip and have the chassis as flexible at the rear as I could but with out killing its super rotational speed(too flexi so bogs out),some corners at Mendip even though hair pins are fast so front end stability is the makings of an easy drive and fast lap.....Ok keep the front end stiff'ish and use geometry/springs to keep good initial steering but perhaps remove some rear top deck screws to gain some rear grip, watch the car to see how it rotates and maybe alter rear lower roll points and camber link positions to improve/reduce side bite?......Besides the stiffer the chassis the more perfect your set up will need to be You said the car was bad on the banking,Grip roll yes?. I noticed that you and the other Xrays seemed to run the rear camber links quite parallel to the wish bone? this gives very little camber gain and can cause the car to run on the outer edges of the tires when the suspension is compressed suddenly at high speed causing the car to bite and grip roll ,dropping the camber link inboard or better still raising it on the outer will help here (raising on the outer will give faster/sooner camber gain compared to inboard)Altering the inboard also affects the roll center too. Oh and Mendips track lay out to me sits between Aldershot and west London ,medium for technicality but bloody fast!

Hi Les, I have no idea how but I MISSED ( ) your post here over a week ago. Wow some real interesting stuff there. It will be fun to see what setups the 3 of us end up with!!! Good comments on XRAY/Aldershot which I thought were fair. I suspect that we run a shorter wheelbase and narrower front axle than the others (a subject which tends not be discussed that much) and it did strike me the other day that the next time at Aldershot I think I will set the front axle back to the kit setting ( I already added 1mm to the wheelbase). Reuben and I gave on on the gear diffs after Q1 on Sunday but I think I will change the front axle and put the gear diff back in for Mendip and see what happens (maybe add another 1mm to the wheelbase too)

On the shorter wheel base and narrow front end comment...to me that spells disaster with over rotation on a car that already has plenty of steering? One easy way to kill vicious steering is to space out the front wishbone away from the bulk heads(wider track but done inboard) then play with geometry, springs, damping etc etc to keep good initial steering....this should help with stability and rear end entry grip too(hooking)

Good luck to you all at mendip. Les the above post is fantastic how do you know and remember all that information. Its accumulated over time mate.Remembering what does what is easy the hard part is understanding when to adapt it to the car for the grip level and track layout! Making a car easy to drive is relativly simple but making it faster for those extra tenths per lap is bloody hard! tbh most changes made to improve a set up are best guess trial and error but once found its never forgoten....this takes hours of track time practice too.

It looks pretty certain that we will have to pull out - commitments I have that I thought I was going to clear by today/tomorrow but now seems unlikely. On the positive side I managed to get one of the last pro-stock entries yesterday for the Nats as a replacement.

I struggled all day with failures of one kind or another, including a blown spool bearing, which put me 9th in the C, although I'm sure my laptimes would have put me in the B!
Final 1 all but 1 of my bodyclips came off, somehow, which meant I had to pull out - got a great start into 3rd by lap 2!
Final 2 got a great start into 4th, and took 2nd by the halfway point. I'd taped my bodyclips down to make sure I didn't lose any! Finished 2nd about 3 secs behind 1st, so a good run to end the day.
If anything it's shown me how much I have been missing out on - I'm gonna look at booking into Chippenham over the next few days!
