Sometimes I sit in my office and look out at the sunshine thinking, I should be out there, on a sun kissed beach with one of my off road trucks, doing donuts and making lines in the damp sand, watching the rooster tails of sand rise from the rear wheels as I power slide it. Listening to the laughter of my mates as they also tear up and down with their trucks making patterns in the sand with their knobbly tyres and leaping from the dunes, just clipping the water’s edge and sending showers of spray in the air, the sun making each drop sparkle like a diamond and creating miniature rainbows. No one else around, no one to complain about the noise or the inconvenience, no Health and Safety jobsworths telling you to do risk assessments before you race and always wear rubber gloves and a helmet in case of some obscure possibility you might hurt yourself. Just me, a few mates and some off road trucks. Lots of sunshine, lots of laughter and fun.
There are other times I see a vast open plain of hard packed dirt, littered with gently sloping humps and bumps, suddenly out of nowhere comes a pack of multi-coloured buggies, leaping into the air off one the humps, landing hard in a cloud of dust that sparkles as it mixes with the streaming sunshine making iridescent spiral vortices gradually dissipating into nothing as the buggies disappear over the next rise. The sound of laughter from a bunch of guys with transmitters playing chase with their cars on this magical landscape. The smell of the exhausts and the high pitched scream of the engines adding to the heady mixture of fun and sun.
Then the phone rings and back to earth. Yet another mundane and totally insignificant problem to sort out, someone else who has no idea where I was, and now expects me to be civil too them when they have so rudely interrupted my daydream.
Heaven is a place on earth, it’s just not here…….yet!
