Evening all - I've been out and spent my hard earned pennys on a Scythe I'm halfway through the build at the moment but there seems to be far to much play in the rear diff - any bright ideas? the two halfs seem to move far more than they should (lateral movement) regardless of how tight the thrust bolt is??
Many thanks
Matt

I wouldn't worry about it personally, the Cyclone kit is the same, even with the new pro-diff theres still a little bit of play in there. So it'll be ready for tomorrow then Liam

Matt ball diff pullys "if thats what you are talking about" are ment to "float" or have rocking/tilting feel ,its nothing to worry about, just make sure you use the correct grease on the balls /plates(silicon grease) and a graphite based grease in the side thrust bearing,If in doubt let someone check it befor you run....The play in the pully helps it to have self alignment with the belt and front drive pully under load...Lateral movement?? the whole diff should have some free side ways movement between the bearing, but not too much,0.5 mm is about right,If It's more than this there are some shims avaiable to fit between the bearing and outdrive shoulder...Tightening the diff screw wont remove any wobble/slop you may feel it only puts pressure on the balls through the plates, normaly the play your feeling will probably dissapear when the diff is clamped into the diff carrier leaving just the pully to float about some..A smooth slip free diff is one of the most important items to make the car handle and is normaly overlooked by new drivers...hope this has helped
Have you got the red upgrade kit and how did you get on with the Scythe build manual ??...not too good is it ??...Becareful if I rember correctly the early manual showed an incorect way to build the diff....somthing to do with the direction of the adjusting screw and position of the spring and thrust race...I think??

The instructions where quite literally second to none a waste of paper!
I'll finish the build tonight, and then the kind Mr Loyd has said he'll give me some time on Tuesday to ensure its all running as it should, I really haven't enjoyed the build, mainly 'cause of the destructions!

Matt if your new car comes with a spool you may want to consider fitting a front diff, for any new driver it "WILL" make the car easier to drive, spools make the car snatch/grip "feel twitchy" and will shatter outdrives due to impacts very easy, they also increase tire and drive shaft wear dramaticaly(same for any make) fitting a front diff may save you in the long run until you are more consistant, say 18 laps?even at that pace fitting a spool may only gain a driver quarter of a lap....I always used to run a front diff untill I was pushing 20 laps consistantly, for the above reasons If I had my way iI would ban spools, the mechanic's of them are all wrong!!"full size don't dont use them"..they make a car harded to drive for the new driver, show up poor set up and hurt your pocket(ask Chris Newbury)...who's up for a diff only revolution!! ;D ;D ;D....Yes I know they are faster "only slightly though!!" if your thumbs can cope

leave my new car alone!
I'll get it running as standard first and do a meeting- then I'll look at fitting a diff- by which time I should know where to get one and how much they are!
from what I hear red is very good so you can get stuffed Mr "it dont count if you dont own it" Roe

Well Mr "quick switch car change" Sedgley, I can't sit back and listen to you haviing a pop at my No.1 competitor, especially after he saved your bacon with a spare speedo for Ollies car ;D How's the Scythe going, has she touched tarmac yet? I bet you'll still want the blue TA05, with a new motor obviously

Well done Matt you got a PROPER Car! you wont be dissapointed. And yes Les is right, spools are a pain in the pocket. I snapped 2 at the Eastbourne SLCC (well others did it for me.) Dont worry though Yokomo spools fit ok in the Scythe and I have a Titatnium Racing one where the outdrives can be replaced on their own at only £2:50 each side.
Hmm did you make sure you have the steering C hubs on the right sides! Both Simon and I had them on the wrong side and were driving around with negative castor wondering why the car was sooo twitchy and just thinking its the way they handled, untill Dr Baldry spotted the mistake. (Mind you I did get a 18/314 with it like that, but thats just pure driving skill!)

The very kind Adam "I'm going to buy every brushless in america" Roe spotted it as soon as he took it from the box! top marks to Adam for seeing my schoolboy error.
For what it's worth I do feel quite bad about Ollie's Receiver and Iain's motor, I had a pretty bad day, although I did stay up until 3am putting together "ellenor" I guess that would have had a impact on my reactions and generally driving a prat - Sorry once again you two
So anyone any ideas about where/how to get a diff and also - how did you break the oneway chrisandsimon?? just so I know for Yeovil!!

Actually Matt if you need it I have a well run in stock motor that you can have at a very reasonable price. The armature looks a bit like one of Rob's burgers but should be quick enough for you anyway!
Oh and one ways don't break, spools do. You will like the one way. No brakes. Not that you go fast enough to need them I suppose so may well suit you.
Yeah I quite like this forum as well Les.

Thought you 'boys' never read instructions Should've bought a Cyclone, they have great instructions Col purple rules! blue sucks! dont even get me started on red! Should have bought an Xray. They have great instructions; great setup manual; great lubes; great t-shirts; great dedicated forum with driver and designer input Oh, not particularly important but the bits go together too. Of less importance bits don't break Of even less importance they manufactiure all their parts which are readily available - so you you know that a part is going to work, and if it were to break you can get it. Oh and their shocks don't leak and the pistons can be adjusted in 10secs. Oh and their new spool is like the BMW engine advert, it doesn't vibrate (yes of course it has replaceable outdrives)

Having spent the evening trying to build the Scythe that Matt bought I have to say I am really not impressed with the instructions. Almost impossible for a first time builder to get the car track ready. Still not sure I have got it right but thanks for the help Les. Will be bringing it down tonight so everyone can tell Matt what is wrong.
In Matt's defence he did not do a bad job in getting most of it sorted but somethings you just cant tell from the instructions. Even I struggled and I have built a few cars in the past. ;D
