Assuming you put them on the battery, is it better to put them inboard or outboard?

Both!
Outside for weight distribution, inside to make it look tidy

Directly under the pack is the perfect place but its not practical on todays chassis....get the weight as low as and central as poss...not easy on the Xray, avoid putting large amounts on extremitys...,I mould my own out of "nasty" lead to suit the chassis/pack make (they differ and need different amounts)
Some chassis have a reasonable gap between the pack and belt(not Xray) the majority of the ballast can be neatly placed hear ( stuck on the pack or chassis)..put the rest on the outside of the pack for lateral and longitudinal balance...not on top of the pack!!!

Me personally... Iv'e brough the biggest packs I can fit, and then have about 40g or so undeneath them as locators (using some thin lead servo tapped in place), and 60g on the outside of the battery. Otherwise I do have a little bit more weight dotted around the car (20g under the front bumper, 30g in front of the pack), but not a huge amount, given running a monster LRP fan that quickly adds 35g to the car.

Thanks all; oh decsions decisons. Contrary to malicious rumour the pack with the weights on the inboard face will fit perfectly well. But a carbon pack with black weights will, as Matt says, look so cool its a shame to hide them on the inside
