As many of you know, I used to be on the Committee, but these days am more of a 'willing volunteer' - a normal member.
As someone who's ran meetings, got stuck in, and seen it 'from the other side', I'm always surprised at members who seem to be more 'customers' than 'members'.
I'd like to encourage all our members to be exactly that, members. It's our club afterall!
So, what do I mean? What I mean is, what can we, the members, do to help the committee generally, and the Race Directors on race days?
As a previous Race Director, setting up, and tearing down the meeting on your own isn't much fun, especially if you're trying to race as well.
So, let's come up with a list of things that any member can do on race day, at the beginning, during the racing, and at the end.
Let's not just wait for a committee member to ask us to volunteer, let's just get on with it and all make meetings run smoothly.
[ As an aside, some people think I'm still on the committee, even committee members, because I'm often seen setting something up, or sorting something out. But I'm not, I'm just volunteering, you can too! ]
Okay, things us members can do on a race day:
As you can see, there's quite a list of things to do, and any member can do these, leaving the race director to do the important thing: booking people in, and directing the racing.
Get stuck in, volunteer every race meeting, spare 10 minutes of your race day.
Let's all work together and make full use of the field full of people we have racing these days!
(And, if you're not a member, volunteer anyway! You'll be welcomed back with open arms!)
If you agree, say 'aye' below...

Okay, things us members can do on a race day:
- Hang the results board
- Put the cones out
- Lay the generator cable
- Fill the generator with fuel and oil (please ask someone if you've not done it before for guidance!)
- Put the transponder / numbers table out
- Ensure the PA is working, and the right volume, put out extension speakers (yes! we have some used on big meetings, but we can use them every meeting if someone would put them out!)
- Sweep the track of dust / dirt / water
- Check the portaloo, fill sink with water, ensure loo rolls are there
- etc etc
- and of course reverse applies at the end of a meeting
