I have an extremely dubious looking Lipo. Took it off the car last night and one side of the outer case has come apart by a good ¼ inch at one end, the cell at that end has clearly expanded. Is there an official recommendation for dealing with this? I guess I could • Bury it in the garden –sometimes easier said than done • Lob into a neighbour’s garden who I am having a planning dispute with • Tape it up and sell on on Ebay • Post it to the people who organised the issuing of Olympic tickets • Post it back to the retailer and ask for a refund – the most recent of my Lipos I am certainly not putting in my 1:1 scale car and driving it anywhere. It is currently on the patio well away from anything else.
Help

salt water, add salt to water until no more salt can be disolved (cant remember the scientific term for it)
then put the lipo in that - that is what I have heard before,

Do as Rueben said with the salt water and cut any wires off. Leave in the water for a couple of days. When you first put it in it just bubbles a bit out of the terminals but nothing much. Then take it out and dump it. If your really not sure you can always volt test it first. This is how I did my one and it was fine. Hope this helps mate.

the best method i have seen was courtesy of mr baldry.... I must admit it did go up better than I expected and all i did was give the silver foil a small puncture with a blade!(to prove a point to someone) This is something to be weary of if you are trying to split a casing for repair. This old practice pack had swollen quite badly.TBH It was my own stupid fault it had been left fully charged and forgotten about for quite a while "easily done" And befor an outsider jumps down my throat,I have been trained in the handling, transportation and the use of explosives ,and the pack WAS placed in a sand pit for the demo!! Aparently dropping the pack in a "saturated" conductive salt solution will very slowly discharge the pack keeping the chemical charge/discharge process to the bare minimum there for reducing the risk of fire
