And more importantly what budget...
You could spend anywhere from a few hundred quid to over a thousand!
There are hundreds of combinations, but you have to choose your class and your budget first.

Martin it may seem a simple question but as you have gathered it is not. It really does depend on what you want to do as well as how much you want to spend. For me the "ideal" is a touring car in 17.5 brushless mode so would go for the X Ray T4, LRP FLOW esc and almost any 17.5 motor as they are all pretty good. I am using Sanwa transmitter and receiver at the moment but if I had to start again would probably go KO Propo. Servos, well I use Savox and have never had problems so will stick with those.
The answer is always going to be, go for the best you can afford. As you have seen cheap is not always cheap at the end of the day. Sometimes spending more is cheaper in the long run and more importantly can give you much more satisfaction if you have a good car that works well.

If it helps, both Sean and I are now running the Schumacher Mi5 chassis. Great chassis, but so was the Mi4 before it. A good starting setup and some tweaks and they do exactly what you want them to do. I only got a Mi5 myself (used) as Sean already had one, and one set of spares is better than two.
For electrics, Sean has a Vampire 17.5t motor and a Hobbywing Xtreme stock ESC. I have a Team Powers 17.5t motor and a Hobbywing Quicrun ESC. I tried his car last week and the brakes were superb (they actually worked, I wasn't used to that), so I want his ESC. But he tried my car and says it's much faster than his. So I've got him a Team Powers 17.5t motor for his birthday (Saturday).
I'll probably (definitely) get a new ESC for Christmas. I've already ordered and paid for it.
