Sean and I have been discussing a possible new class recently.
We were thinking of maybe running it on a Sunday, between the normal TC/SC races. So no change to the existing Sunday format.
Our current thinking is that you get one/two lap(s) clockwise, and the same anti-clockwise. Only one marshal as well, so you really need to make sure you don't crash.
Timing could be done using a stopwatch rather than faff about with the timing software/replacing transponders.
Car rules are that they need to run a silver can motor, and have to have rally tyres and a ride height of at least 1cm. We're planning on using either a Tamiya XV01 or TT01 (we've got both).
Our thinking is that as you've basically got four laps, and need to marshal four laps, so this can easily be done in less than five mins. Just need to pair up with someone who will time/marshal you and vice versa.
Any thoughts?
Another possibility would be to have a kind of ladder. You challenge the next person on the ladder to a two lap race with the rally car.

Would this be on the normal tarmac track or are you thinking of a bit of mild off road mixed with tarmac? I think it would be a bit pedestrian as a normal tarmac class but mixed with a bit of off road and running rally cars would be quite interesting.

We were just discussing how to get some use out of the rally cars we have, and something like this would not impact on the main racing going on. And I'm sure most of us have something we could use. Sean even suggested jumps (smaller ones though, he has a couple that would just about be ok). I think something similar was attempted with the scale rc thing a couple of years ago, but it all want TC when everyone put Sorex tyres on the cars.

I quite liked the scale class but a rally class with a bit of smooth off road style would be even better. Not sure about jumps though. You could use the scale rules which basically meant a scale body and a Saturn 20 motor.
The scale thing was always using Sorex tyres, that was never the issue, just the number of people who wanted to do it was the issue as I unfortunately suspect the rally class would be. It is fine for those who already have a spare car of some sort but for anyone else it is just more expense. We all went out and bought trucks the year before last and that has seemed to die a death. We could be racing trucks through the winter as the weather is fairly immaterial to them but again just not enough people.
I suspect the Wednesday evening TC class will be OK again but Sundays will struggle no matter how many classes you have. I hope not but.......

Back in the day when it was an offroad track we actually used to race rally cross. If i remember correctly the rally cars used to do a "joker" lap where the red lines are on the picture. This was mainly to avoid the jumps for the buggys but you could employ a similar tactic of doing one joker lap and 2 normal or such like? Just a thought.

In current full size (1:1) rallycross isn't the joker lap longer than the normal lap??

In current full size (1:1) rallycross isn't the joker lap longer than the normal lap?? Depends if we are referring to Global Rally Cross or World Rally Cross Dave.. In GRC the Joker is a significantly shorter lap, In WRC its longer. Strange... but apparently true. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Rallycross

This is true but GRC is an Americanism of real rally cross. WRC is the way to go. Longer joker lap is a muct. Quite liking the idea of this though especially with some tarmac and some off road, could be interesting.

I love the idea of rally cross, I've seen some cool videos where they have a dirt path track and drift the car thought the turns.
Although really the club doesn't need another class to run because it will spread the drivers thinner over more classes as we are seeing on Wednesdays. Keep it simple

I tend to agree with you Joe. While it would be fun is it just going to dilute the other classes. There will only be a limited number of people who want to do it and if those few only do that class and not 2 classes then it could be a problem again with numbers. If it draws more people in that would not normally be there then good but will it.
The idea of a mixed tarmac and off road track could also be used for the trucks if they ever run again so still might be worth a try.
