well well well - all got a little heated?
my proposal......
for the most efficient design you would want a elongated heat pipe made from copper (wrapped arround the whole motor, that would have a larger opening at the front and rear with a fan to increase air-flow through the pipe to. As rushing the air accross through the pipe at high speeds (due to airflow and pressure) is going to have a huge advantage to getting rid of the heat.
safe cooling is the assumption that you are pulling heat away from the core-spot before this gets hot. Keiths Oven door explanation was spot on really (see other thread) - but how cool do you have to make the oven door before it has a beneficial effect on the heating element in the center of the oven.
btw 2 threads.......rather confusing.
ill post an diagram of the idea, if anyone is interested in prototyping it - loyalties to me ofcourse cos EVERYONE will want one

Very cold Reubs, I have been installing, servicing and repairing motors for a fair few years and have never come across a motor with a cooling fan stapped to the outside, the reason being "they just don't work well enough", if a motor needs cooling the fan blades would be installed inside to blow air over the windings.

if a motor needs cooling the fan blades would be installed inside to blow air over the windings. Just like the the HS "Silver Can RS540SF" Fan Motor made to look like a Tamiya Silver can but 23T and way faster. You can just see the little fan if you look through the vents in the can. Not legal for our Mini heats

Funny but I do not actually remember advocating that everyone should or should not fit a fan.
It would seem it is not possible to have a sensible discussion here about anything technical in case some one disagrees. OK I have removed all my posts and unreservedly apologise for any inconvenience or upset that I may have caused. It is obvious that I have been talking complete and utter rubbish.
Thanks for your time.

Ian, I don't believe anyone has a problem with this discussion or your comments, I certainly haven't, we're all just putting our side of the debate across.
Some people like fans, some don't feel they're neccessary, this forum is very much argument orientated with no offence ment.
Please don't feel that anyone targeted you personally as you were not the only one to share you're point of view, it's just the way these threads always end up.

Steady on guys!!
It all seems to have got rather heated in here,
Why don't we change all this negativity into something positive.
Realistically not many of us have an idea of what's going on at the centre of a BL motor under load, can anyone devise a test that we could quantify, not to decide if fans are needed or not, but to see what the temperature curve is doing during a 5 minute run round bashley? perhaps we could back to back some BLs under particular conditions.. Does any one have a spectrum/other brand data logging system that we could take some readings???

Feeling sweaty on those warm days. Get relief and stay cool as you mount the winners rostrum. Givenchy’s new fragrance Rotating Windings will keep you running when others melt. Get the family pack with free brushes.

matt we don't need a test to decide what is happening inside a motor . the motor manufacturers have told us what to look for in temp when running our motors. now i would think those figures would have a measure of safety built into them. stay within those figures and everything should be ok. i have the spektrum and another telemetary system and in the tests i have done a fan only has reduced the outside temp by a few degrees. i feel a fan only calms any doubts a person might have and bring peace of mind. this is my opinion someone else might feel that a fan benefits them more, fine this sport is about the differences between the racers and doing the best we can to get as fast as we can.

OK, sorry guys, I took this off thread earlier, apologies!
Posts about cooling in the fan thread and maybe this thread can return to 17.5 opinions!

At last we've joined the 17.5 brigade for the winter. I must admit I was impressed by the output once the big pinions were on. Only one problem as I can see....... now got a big lump of Losi BLUE in our lovely PURPLE car.
