Hi all, so as i am getting into the club racing schene i need to get the low down on a few sets of tyres. Maybe a set for the wet (damp) and a set for the dry (warm) and a set for the dry (silly cold).
now i have been looking around and have found so many different combinations hard foam inserts, soft and medium. Also slicks and different tread patters-again soft and hard and different cmpounds!! And to make it even more difficult different sizes 24mm & 26mm, oh and finally most good priced tyres are not on rims so i dont know what rims will fit what tires. Im so confused, can anyone save me from myself.
I see mirage have a few nice sets in there clearance corner, but i dont know what is good and worth spending the pennies on. Coz once i have a set for each condition then i can just replace them with identicals when i need to buy some more.
Thanks all. ;D

Hi James, Rc cars are a minature form of motor sport and like motor sport you can spend big on tyres and if you don't have the right tyres for the track conditions you won't win. Saying that its quite possible to race 1/10 TC on one set of tyres for several months and still have a great time racing. As a noobie i'd suggest a set of pre built 24mm tyres such as Sorex 28R which would be about £23 for a set of 4. RP 24's prebuilt would be good also. along with VTEC 24's/28's, all of which come pre glued with medium (ish) inserts on 24mm wide wheels.
I would suggest staying away from building your own wheels at the moment as you could end up spending lots of time and effort glueing up wheel tyre and insert combos only to find they dont work very well. Most racers these days use prebuilt wheels and tyres because a)its easy and b)it levels out competition (everyone will have to use say SOREX 30's at bigger meetings).
Pop into Terry's shop 'reality racing' in New Milton if you get a chance he's got a selection of current wheel and tyres.

James thats sound advise from Rob..this time of year RP 24's,Sorex 24's should work well (soft compound)..or CS 22's if you can find them pre mounted..If you can afford it a set of treaded wet tyres can sometimes be a must have when the tracks damp...Pop and see Terry at Reality Racing,he will be able to sort you the right tyres.
If you decide to race on Sunday, but have no tyres, dont worry,we will be able amongst us to find a set that works for you.
Dont worry too much at the moment about too many different compounds, but please chat to the club racers befor you buy there is some cheap junk tyres out there that just dont work!!

wet tires we use pit shimitzu D20 and slicks we'll use lower temperature rated tyres in the winter, ie 20 - 28.

CS22s' the bees knees for these temperatures and I suspect the Sorex 24Rs will be pretty decent although I have not tried them yet at sub 8-10c air temp.

Thanks for the help guys, i do have a set of tyres on the car at the mo. They are not branded but tbh i bought them as like show wheels coz they have nice rims lol. But they do have tred in a linear wave shape from left to right and they dont have foam inserts but they are probs only 2 mm thick no space for foam and they are semi hard compound. I have been using them for bashing but as i said i bought them for the pre-glued rims on them, and plus they were from ebay so tbh compared to the rubber u guys have they are just cr*p.
Thanks all.

if they are anything like the ones i got with the tt-01 id suggest no(didnt even have inserts), but dont worry about disrespecting the wife as im sure there are plenty of tires around that you can use(not wanting to speak for anybody else) i for one have some sets that i want to clear out of my tire box that would suit a guy new to 1/10th, im just not there this weekend, if you want them seek me out in the next few weeks (same to you james)

I think it's time I label a bucket for recycling tyres, there'll be more than me that takes tyres out of it again I'm sure!

Thanks Saintrooer i think that sound like a good idea, it would be a good way to build up a few sets of different condition tyres at a lower cost specially as i guess the tires have more than a few runs left in them. I like the idea of a tyre bin, i went to a club once where people donated half worn unwanted tyre sets to the "rubber box" and there was a set fee of £5 for a set (4) and all the money made from the "rubber box" went on eigther the club refurbing something for the club i.e. control box or for a night out for the club.
Anyway im tired so im gunna call it a night. I have a feeling i will be bringing my cheque book on sunday as i feel SHMCC is a nice place to join!
Regards

James! I'm beginning to like you already! That's a good idea about the tires! If keiths got a set you can have FOC Pete I've got a set you can have FOC that aren't to tired.. i might have some for Gary also, although there'll be plenty of sets rolling round I'm sure Simon - you can't have any you've only bought one set in how many months!!? D20s seem to be the way to go for super cold conditions, however I'm having quite good success from sorex 24r pre- mounted (I've not been racing long enough to attempt to mount my own!) The tires I've got spare are 28s they're a control tire in the summer for SLCC.. Looking forward to seeing James, Gary, and Pete out there bright and early on sunday!! Matt

I guess that depends on whether you want to have fun and win Reuben (with the obvious caveat that I clearly know zilch about brushless stuff )

I didnt know brushless directly affected certain tyres..... so again you should be safe with some 24's.

Quite what will happen on Sunday though when I pack Ross into the car and not Craig, God only knows and he is not telling me at the moment
