Hi guys. Well I have sadly come to the end of the Photon build and getting to the stage of putting in the motor in while waiting for the speed controller to arrive. I have managed to pick up a second hand losi 17.5 from the forum but haven't a clue what size pinion gear to start with. At the moment the spur is the standard 100t / 64p boxed one so would it be best to change both at the start or wait to see how it pans out. Really was looking for some help on a good place to start. I have looked on the net about ratios and so on but think sometimes there is no substitute for experience. Also thanks for all the help everyone has given so far. Never used a forum till now but cant believe how useful they are. Darren

Hi Darren,
Gearing is a funny thing. Most people run very different ratios.
So your running the losi 17.5, what esc are you planning to run? also i'm assuming you just want a base line for bashley memorial hall? As all tracks can require different ratios. (As can different track layouts)

Hi Jason Yeah the hall and bashley would be the first places it would be used. I am waiting for the LRP stock spec speed controller to come through from the States. Think its pretty much the same as the nosram stock spec matrix evo that i think your using.
I was also thinking of the spare gears i would need. Would i need a selection or maybe the ones above and below the setup i am using. Eventually i am going to get one of your EA motors ones from terry but for now the £20.00 losi will do the job.
Just the basic gearing help would be great though.Ie motor temp presumably is something to do with it? But i dont have a clue what the optimum temp range is for a motor ?
Sorry for all the questions mate
Darren
Cheers Darren

Darren the spur that comes with the car is 64dp (which has fine teeth ) i would recomend you change to 48dp which is a bit stronger ( we all use it ) the gear ratio is spur/pinion x2 for the photon depending on where you run inside or outside and with what speedo depends on the gearing. about 70 deg c is about right for the motor above 80 and things start to melt, i run mine at about 60-65 ish depending on the heat of the sun
hope this helps ian

Hi Darren
Find your self a 48 dp 75 tooth spur gear Match this with a 48dp 30 tooth pinion this will give you a 5.0:1 ratio, set your speedo to punch setting 5 (to start with)...this will give a nice smooth delivery of power and good top end at Newmiltons track.
As you get used to the car and its speed you can increase the punch setting gradually, the ratio I have suggested is very safe temp wise and worked perfectly for me with the same motor and speedo combo that you are using."when geared correctly the little Losi 17.5 is plenty fast enough on our little track even to chase Jamies 13.5 ;D"
Getting the best out of any motor "finding the sweet spot" can be very confusing to an experianced driver let alone a new one, dont worry about gearing and temps at the moment stick to whats suggested and you wont go wrong.

Thanks chaps was thinking i would need to change the spur gear and this will give me a good starting point. The speedo help is useful also Les. I have downloaded the PDF manual for the LRP and read it a couple of times and the mode settings was one thing that i was not sure of. so many modes and LEDs. oh well, cant work so may as well swat up on that. Jamie and Neil have kindly offered me a lift so will see you all tonight.
