Apart from water carpet fluff has got to be the next worse thing to knacker your bearings,One clubs carpet produces so much fluff it actually will turn its self into a black ring inside the cage and fully bind the bearing action. The only way to remove this ring is to remove the shield and painstakingly pick out the solid fluff ring, even then success is not guaranteed and new bearings are required.I have heard of people trying to "burn" out the fluff but personally I cant see this working too well. I think a solvent thats capable of melting the fibers may work,Ive tried soaking the bearings in thinners but this is a waste off time . Any solvent experts out there that can suggest a powerfull fluid that may work....Acetone??? Two solvent that do come to mind,Carbontetrachloride and Tricoethalene I think are no longer available (banned)??

I'm sure Tricoethalene is now banned not sure about the other choice.
I have some acetone you can try but I doubt that will be vicious enough, failing that methyl ethyl ketone or MEK might be worth a go.
I think you are going to struggle using a solvent to clean them although solvents may melt plastics and polymers but they usually leave some form of residue. But it is worth a try.
