Hi a note to the Committee; there is a new BRCA initiated thread on racechat from Bob Burr - 17.5 class clubs - with a view to starting a 17.5 non timing class in the Clubmans series next year and he is trying to get an understanding of what clubs run what in terms of 17.5. Thought I ought to pass it over you guys

I think 17.5 died when Pro-Eco was brought in.
Pro-eco has the more manageable speeds, less wear, cheaper gear that we were all wanted from 17.5 and pro-eco just seems to do it better (especially since timing came along).
Its too late for 17.5 at national / most club levels.
In my opinion (not commitee) I would like to see 17.5 dropped as a seperate class and we just run Stock (which is graded Eco / Pro-Eco or F1 and F2) and Brushless (which is F1 and F2, with F1 being 13.5 - 2.5 and F2 being 17.5 - 21.5). But thats a seperate debate for AGM time.
Maybe the clubmans should look at doing something more niche and suitable? Anyone want to suggest a control sealed-can to the BRCA?

BHWAAAAA. I hope not Reuben. Ross and I were thinking of making a 17.5 comeback next season (well of course a startback for me) with non timing ESCs and throttle epas turned down - we have two XRAY 008's sitting there doing nothing

If the BRCA had suggested this a year ago and acted on it then it may have got somewhere. Not so sure now though, a bit late I feel.
As has been said, Pro Eco has taken the place of non timing 17.5 and seems to be working. I do think it is a good class, maybe you should try it Pete.

The US has been running some very popular 17.5 boosted and non boosted (Blinky) series for quite a while!! Im not sure If I would like to see 17.5 dropped completely even though 17.5 boosted has become way quicker than we imagined but I can understand and see where Reuben is coming from for our track! Pro-eco has become popular(even though some doubted its speed and "fun factor" ) but the 540 motors are pushed to the limits and a class such as 17.5 non boosted would be a gentle step up in technology and speed (close to a lap faster??).There is a range of ECO brushless motors and speedo's out there so It may be worth considering as a class for the club? Personally I don't think Bob Burr will get much response which will be a shame as most racers theses days seem to have a bloody stigma and snobbery about driving a so called slow stock class .....I think they are all missing out on the "fun" side of competitive racing.........some of you will remember the extremely close quarter racing we had during the SLCC 17.5 class series. That's a nice thought of suggesting a sealed can motor to the BRCA but I don't think there's a powerful enough and reliable make out there to cope with the bigger tracks? after all we are gearing the 21t to the hilt at the moment to get reasonable top end speed on our little strait! Running one of theses at say Aldershot or West London would be a total "Yawn" even for a newby.. Pro-eco I think only works well on the smaller tracks such as ours.

Would be interesting to try a non timing 17.5 and see what the difference is in speed to the Ansmann 21t motor.
The only problem with doing this class as a beginner/Pro Eco class is that it will cost a lot more than it does now for someone just starting perhaps. I know long term it may turn out cheaper and would be less maintenance maybe but the initial cost is a worry.
Also there is the fact we would again be adding yet another class. We are blessed at the moment with only a few classes to contend with but there is already a problem in getting numbers to do each class on a race day and inevitably we end up running different classes together with limited success.
Would there also not be a problem with scrutineering? Not that we do any now as we generally do not need to but unless you specify a certain motor and speedo for everyone there will always be some chance of one being better than another and people having or trying to change to get more speed. At least with the Ansmann sealed motor you know exactly where you are and everyone is the same.

The Tekin speedo with 212 can be set to non-timed and flashes different lights at neutral to confirm.

At least with the Ansmann sealed motor you know exactly where you are and everyone is the same. I think this is a really important point Ian. The tight specification means there is no way/point to spend money to improve performance. And when you want to you just buy a 17.5 second hand. It would be interesting to see if a 17.5 with a non timed Tekin is slower than a 17.5 with an ISTC on programme 4, which is what Ross ran ( I think he finally crept up to throttle epa set at 95%) and from memory I think that is faster than a 21T sealed can.
