Looking for some advice on various things if anyone can help.
Firstly what motor to run at Bashley outdoors for 17.5 blinky?
Have heard a lot of good things about the Trinity D3.5 but not sure if its legal at Bashley? Whats everyone else running and is there really any noticeable difference between them all? Is having adjustable motor timing really necessary?
Secondly is Tyres, From what i understand its Sorex 28s and 32s with yellow inserts for outdoors? Whats the difference between them and when do you use the different variant? Is anyone else using non Sorex tyres with good results or are Sorex the best around Bashley? Am i right in thinking the same tyres with the blue inserts are used indoors? And where can i get them from without breaking the bank?
Lastly gearing, What sort of starting set up would i be looking at going with? Or is this all dependent on motor and timing etc?
Thanks in advance,
Andy

Hi Andy,
We only normally stipulate motors by turns at Bashley and assume commercially available only rules. So a D3.5 would be OK to use, however seeing as ROAR originally banned the 3.5 I would suggest It's use over this side of the pond could also be limited?? I'd go for a Speed Passion or equivalent to ensure you won't run into any issues if you decide to race at any "official" events..
Sorex are almost 100% used at Bashley 28's are a softer compound and mostly used in colder weather.. 32's are harder and used for Summer racing.. Compounds are the same for indoors and only the foam inserts change for indoor to outdoor.. A full set of wheels with pre glued tyres are around £25 with little or no price change between retailers..
Blinkey gearing outside is around 3.5 and 4-4.5 indoor but it is motor, ESC , car and driving style dependant..
Hope this helps
Dave

Cheers Dave much appreciated.
From what I’ve read they re-instated the D3.5 until the D4 supposedly comes out some when in the first quarter of 2014 thereafter it will be banned. But like you say if I choose to do anything more official in the future then it may well become a problem, No point investing in a motor I can’t use everywhere. Are the speed passions a common choice up at bashley then? I seem to be reading a lot about motors and as you probably know a lot of people think the one there using is the best which makes me ask the questions is there any real difference between them all for blinky racing. Would I be better asking which ones to steer clear of rather than which is most popular or the best?
Ill best order me some Sorex 28s and 32s then, yellow inserts right?
Thanks again.

Hi Andy. It is an interesting one in relation to the 3.5 (I found the following article and it is very intersting: www.rcsoup.com/2013/01/roar-outlaws-the-uber-fast-team-trinity-d3-5-17-5-line-of-motors/ , it looks like BRCA Electric board also state that the wire used must be: 17.5T Class:- 17.5 turns of 2 x 20 awg. (or 0.813 mm) max. wire dia. This would suggest that from ROAR's findings the 3.5 is technically not a legal 17.5..... But then again we don't run to the BRCA or ROAR list and as long as it was commercially available in the UK (I am interested to know where ) then it could be run (Unless the club specifically states that the motor is illegal) (My profile says im committee, but that is out of date due to my break from the sport so dont use this post as a reference for it being able to be run or not). I personally use my old Trinity Duo2 which is a fantastic motor. For reference for what you definitely wont have issues with, check this out: www.centralbooking.org/cbs/files/EB05-Brushless_Motors_175T_Spec-2014_v1.pdfGearing for outdoors start at 3.8 to be super-safe. I am running 3.49 on mine

Hi Reuben, Yeah i read something similar regarding the wire gauges however it seems there's an inconsistency somewhere as some conform and some dont, however it appears its still ROAR legal.. www.liverc.com/news/special_features/5071-ROAR_and_Trinity_speak_on_the_%22D3.5_Agreement%22/However i too cant find anywhere in the UK that sell them apart from the odd ebay advert. However i dont plan on using one as stated before if i want to do any other racing ill need a BRCA legal one which the D3.5 is not. Thanks for the list, ill be sure to get something from that range i just need to decide which one.. I think ill probably go more on looks than anything else at this rate.. Possibly reedy sonic mach 2 or LRP x20 or possibly the Xerun V10 if anyone has any experience of these?

In regards tyres:
this time of year until november/december I would purely be running 32's (yellow inserts). 28's are good for the cold days below 10c air temps usually and damp tracks but they just generate too much grip outdoors.
Indoors the best tyre by far is a 28jb (blue insert). You can use the blue inserts outside but because they are harder the tyre doesnt last as long. it tends to form a ridge and tear next to the sidewall before you used all of the rubber up.
I have used RP30's in the past and they are equivalent new to a sorex tyre but drop off in performance quicker (and feel a little squishy if that makes sense, an easy but not necessarily fast drive). We had a nightmare when we tried Sweep tyres (Do they even do those anymore?) they were just bad and liked to unglue themselves mid-race.
STCC tyres are pretty good too (or were).
The trouble with tyres seems to be that because Sorex own such a huge following in the UK, all the setups you see, tips, availability and to an extent bias views are based on sorex. And £20ish+ is a lot to invest in other tyres that might be slow/bad when you can just join the rest at £25 and know your not at a disadvantage

As always each to their own. For 17.5 Blinkey we used 28s throughout the Reality Racing Cup last year and found them fine. They may not have been the reason why we won the Championship but no doubt they helped. Certainly if ambient temps were to hit 80s one might reconsider, but then it did not/does not.
We always use 32s for 13.5 boosted, 28s would be wrecked.
