Hi I don't know that much about brushless. If you buy a brushless motor, does the speed controller have to be the same make as the motor?

Hi, In a word no, the two main types are sensored and sensor less brushless.
this means with sensored theres a connection from the motor to the speedo to give acurate info on the position of the motor, as long as the speedo is sensored then most of the current brca (and some not) brushless motors should work fine.
if your just buying for the first time go and ask in a shop/ ask others on here what they are using so you don't buy the wrong thing as you could buy the wrong suff on ebay etc quite easily.
